Day 21: whistle down the windfarms, and Ben pulls another all-nighter

Well, he did it again. Ben did not sleep for one minute and we have a sweet new pod to show for it. We'll see how long he can last! (Thank you, Ben!)

And now for wind. Who doesn't like windmills? Who wouldn't want clean energy?
Maybe you if it were in your backyard...or if you worried that the means to the end might cause more damage than it would offest in the long run.

Yesterday we left the house at 5:30am to meet the delightfully salty Andy Stern, and visit the Hull wind turbine that stands on the shore next to the Hull high school football field. We learned that the streamlined machine delivers approximately 7% of the electricity for 20000 homes in the little town of Hull, and that the villagers are very supportive of its being there. We then headed to Boston to talk to Mark Rodgers of CapeWind about the proposed offshore windfarm for Nantucket Sound which has been in development for over 5 years and which is still highly controversial among local residents.

Rodgers says that the major complaint is coming from rich people who don't want their view spoiled from their summer homes. So today we are driving to Cape Cod to hear the opposing viewpoint from Save Our Sound Director, Charles Vinick, a well-known ocean conservationist, in the hopes of shedding some light on the complex issue of environmental sustainability and humankind's insatiable need for fuel and energy. We'll let you know what we find.

To Be Continued...
