Day 5: Aunt Lyn's, Ashland mine and Centralia, PA

Woke to the smell of cooked bacon wafting up three floors to our bedroom at Lyn & Bill's house in Shawnee On the Delaware, PA. I wish I didn't love it - I do really feel i should become a vegetarian - but nothing brings back childhood happiness like the smell of bacon and coffee, and we have sort of made a pact that we will eat whatever is offered to us as a sign of gratitude to our hosts.
I left the boys sleeping and found my way downstairs to find Lyn right where i knew she would be, at the stove, turning over pancakes that she built from scratch. Mark appeared shortly after, then Ben eventually made it down and joined us with sleepy eyes narrowed, suspicious that I'd made him rise prematurely. It was a most wonderful breakfast with lively and thoughtful conversation, which I think i largely captured on video with the tiny Canon Elph that Ben got for me. The little camera is turning out to be a little lifesaver in situations where the big cameras are just not practical. The question will be how to use the Elph footage, as it is very different from the gorgeous quality of the big girls...pretty raw, to be sure...

OMG we are getting tired.
Mark had planned on our going through about 3 HD tapes per week and we are shooting almost 3 tapes per day. I am sure that we will learn as we go along that some things just do not need to ba taped but, to be frank, all of the interviews that we got today were priceless to us. So we may just have to ratchet down...
Ben and Mark are setting up to capture video right now, and Mark is preparing to give his Inconvenient Truth presentation tomorrow night. I think I will have to go to bed and muse on this all and write fresh in the a.m. After i have had a much-needed shower and coffee, and played with my friend Meghan's baby.
i am turning into pumpkin, and going to bed to dream of burning coal mines and deserted cities where the streets are being reclaimed by trees...

I'm eager to hear about your travels yesterday. T & I went to Centralia, PA once. A seriously creepy place.

Hey Julie! I'm so glad you're blogging, and I'll continue to keep up! I like the new photos, and I couldn't help noticing that one in this entry seems to have a Bernise Mountain Dog in it!

Save travels you guys!
