ok so i maybe was expecting too much from the Live Earth concert today. But not being able to bring in our water bottles? Come on. No amount of good planning could have kept us hydrated in that concert, since bottled water was the ONLY water allowed into the stadium (and that with the cap OFF) and we are not buying bottled water, in our attempt not to make waste! So we broke down and bought a $4 bottle of water partway through the scorching day and drank it in like 10 seconds. Later, the water from the fountain that Mark finally found to refill it tasted so over-chlorinated and suspiciously funky we were barely able to drink it. Mark actually stood by the drinking fountain and drank from it every few minutes until he felt better. He has a pretty intense redneck sunburn too!
maybe i was expecting a bit more crunchy granola at the tailgates, and way fewer drunken college kids stumbling around over their beer bottles and plastic cups that didn't make it to the recycling tents...I was hoping for maybe less commercialization than the usual fare...but how could i expect that, really? for a super high-profile, incredibly expensive, one-time-only pop concert that doubles as a benefit to help the environment featuring a Alicia Keyes, John Mayer, Bon Jovi, Kanye West, Smashing Pumpkins, Pink Floyd (well, Roger Waters), and a reunion of the Police? Ain't no Grateful Dead show. Sadly. Maybe bc i haven't been to a concert in so long, I didn't know what to expect. I just thought that, due to the nature of the event, there might be a change in the usual protocol.
Yes Al Gore did speak, Yes there were recycling bins all over the parking lot and the stadium, Yes there were some people in green shirts...but my god, the commercialization was rampant. All 5$ hotdogs and pretzels and Budweiser and Mrs. Field's Cookies and stupid drunk guys yelling at Alicia Keys to get off the stage, "We only came here for Dave Matthews!" (oh yeah, he was there too).

It is sad to hear that Live Earth was so typical. Especially, about not being allowed to bring in bottled water.
